People still query me on why I am here, or still here at least. I imagine that this initial small talk topic will never cease to come as a staple in one’s conversation diet. However, I still churn out the same old answer like it was almost read straight from an autocue. I have never taken much thought to this as I have always been very content living here, but slowly but surely I am beginning to wonder: ‘Why am I still here?’ I love Budapest, don’t get me wrong. I love the way the Danube... Bővebben →
Continuing from last post… I’m not impartial to drinking pálinka in the morning, I try not to make it a regular habit, but if there was ever a time I wanted one, it was now. After we gathered the blood from the pigs, we weighed them up, paid the farmer (?) and hurled the 100kg beasts onto the trailer, of which had an engine that I can only describe as being a modified lawn mower motor with wheels. After pushing the trailer up an icy hill, we eventually made it back to the house, where we... Bővebben →
Just like any young, curious boy – I had no problem digging up the garden to find new insect victims to dismember. But nothing could prepare me for what I had to encounter at a traditional, Hungarian family Disznóvágás (Pig Killing). I had always heard of this family tradition where the family members get up at silly o’clock in the morning, drink a couple of pálinkas, then go and kill an unsuspecting swine. I thought this kind of experience was something way beyond what a humble foreigner... Bővebben →
When in Rome Budapest. Since living in Budapest, I have done a few visits back to the UK. I usually go back if something of great importance is happening, such as a good friend’s birthday, when a friend or relative (or my Mum) gets married, or Christmas. This is mostly always a great and joyous occasion, filled with good times, good company, and good booze. This is never a problem, but this time I thought it was time for a change. I decided pretty early on in the year that I would stay in Budapest... Bővebben →
In a previous post ‘A lesson to learn’ I wrote about my first ever private student – a married, 40 year old librarian with no children who wanted purely conversational English. After she failed to bring in the books and other materials she promised she would bring (thus me not preparing anything), I had to act quickly and swiftly, which of course, didn’t happen that way. During this panic I struggled to find any small talk topics we hadn’t already come across in our first meeting,... Bővebben →
If I did have any reason to move to Hungary it was to learn the language enough so I can at least have a conversation with a small child. I must admit, when it comes to learning languages the English are very ignorant to the fact that not everybody in the world learns theirs, so language education in England is second rate. Because of this gap in our knowledge, when faced with the issue of non-communication in a foreign country, English people seem to think that just talking slower and louder at... Bővebben →

The English have their tea with milk and sugar; the Americans have their burgers and hot dogs. The Scottish wear their colourful skirts (without any underwear), and central and eastern Europe have their strong liquor, and of course, their lovely ladies. But it begs the question, who has the most jaw dropping females in central and eastern Europe? There is much debate about this, and as much as ‘beauty lies in the eye of the beholder’, there is certainly some rivalry between these neighbouring... Bővebben →
Day to day, week to week, month to month this city definitely has some surprises. Whether it be the weather, the people, or the little things you notice each day which after a while seems to alter your understanding of life in the city and of everyone around you. Even so, you wouldn’t want it any other way. New students, especially private ones, are always a brand new experience for both the student and teacher, but is sometimes a terrifying time for both parties. To sum it up, Hungarian-expat...
